Master Sergeant Roy Benavidez was a US Army Green Beret, Medal of Honor Recipient and veteran of the Vietnam War. What awarded him the Medal of Honor was his actions on May 2nd 1968 where he boarded a helicopter with his medical bag and knife only and then went voluntarily into an area of heavy enemy resistance where a 12 - man special forces team was pinned down and were met with enemy resistance. Due to enemy fire the helicopter couldn't drop Benavidez at the pick up zone so instead he jumped from the helicopter and ran approximately 75 yards under small arms fire to the crippled team. .
During the 6 hour fire fight Benavidez was shot 7 times, had over 20 shrapnel wounds, was clubbed to the point to where his jaw was dislocated, bayoneted several times resulting in him having to hold his intestines in his hands before being evacuated out by helicopter. He was so badly injured he was actually placed in a body bag and was being zipped up when a buddy noticed he was in the body bag. Benavidez's buddy insisted that the medic check him out one more time and after some arguing the medic relented checked once more and Benavidez used his last bit of strength to spit in the face of the medic and called it " the best shot he ever made in his entire life". From there he was sent to an aid station where he did recover and continued to serve and additional 10 years in the Army.
Oh by the way all of this was after he broke his back by stepping on a land mine and was told he would never walk again 2 years before this all happened.
